Chipzilla sends not-so-subtle threat to ARM crew

Intel used the 40th anniversary of its x86 architecture to warn chip rivals to mind their step when emulating its instruction set.

The reigning desktop and data center server CPU king (AMD, you know it's true) said it would not hesitate to sic its lawyers on any competitor whose emulation tools got too close to copying the patented portions of its x86 instruction set architecture (ISA).

"Intel welcomes lawful competition, and we are confident that Intel's microprocessors, which have been specifically optimized to implement Intel's x86 ISA for almost four decades, will deliver amazing experiences, consistency across applications, and a full breadth of consumer offerings, full manageability and IT integration for the enterprise," general counsel Steven Rodgers wrote on Thursday.

"However, we do not welcome unlawful infringement of our patents, and we fully expect other companies to continue to respect Intel's intellectual property rights."

The passage is a less-than-subtle warning to Qualcomm and Microsoft, the two companies that have been championing an effort to port Windows to ARM-compatible chips and provide Intel some rare competition (stop whining, AMD) in the desktop and notebook market. The first Snapdragon-powered Windows 10 ARM PCs are due to hit the market later this year.

In order to get Qualcomm's ARMv8-compatible processors to run all Windows apps efficiently, even standard x86 ones, Qualcomm and Microsoft have to emulate Intel's messy instruction set. In other words, Qualy and Redmond want people to run their favorite apps on Snapdragon Windows computers, whether they are built for x86 hardware or ARM.

Microsoft already ships a full x86 system emulator – in its Windows malware protection engine. And x86 emulators have been around for years – see Qemu, for example.

"Emulation is not a new technology, and Transmeta was notably the last company to claim to have produced a compatible x86 processor using emulation ('code morphing') techniques. Intel enforced patents relating to SIMD instruction set enhancements against Transmeta's x86 implementation even though it used emulation," Rodgers noted.

"In any event, Transmeta was not commercially successful, and it exited the microprocessor business 10 years ago."

Qualcomm, however, was unfazed by the warning. The chip designer pretty much told Intel to go fsck itself.

"Given our recent announcement with ASUS, HP and Lenovo, we found the blog that one of our competitors published on June 8 very interesting," a spokesperson told us. Microsoft, meanwhile, appears to be taking the diplomatic route and isn't responding to requests for comment on the matter

W Turcji zmieniają podstawę programowa i wycieli wszystkie informacje o teorii ewolucji. Biorąc pod uwagę, że biologia ma dla wielu osób ważne znaczenie światopoglądowe, które hamuje zostanie osobą ślepo wierzącą to IMHO zła wiadomość, bo stracą kolejny bodziec do niezostawania gorliwymi muzułmanami.

Temat zmian w egzaminie na prawo jazdy to efekt środowej rozmowy w TOK FM Dariusza Chyćki, egzaminatora z Wojewódzkiego Ośrodka Ruchu Drogowego w Lublinie. Członek zespołu doradczego przy ministrze infrastruktury był pytany o zmiany w szkoleniu kierowców.

Jak mówił, "w systemie szkolenia występuje zbyt dużo patologii - niestety także w systemie egzaminowania". Dodał, że "musi ulec zmianie sposób nauczania i utrwalania wiadomości i umiejętności".

W związku z tym jednym z postulatów zgłaszanych przez egzaminatora z Wojewódzkiego Ośrodka Ruchu Drogowego w Lublinie jest zmiana w egzaminach. "Egzamin z teorii nie może być zdawany tylko raz i dożywotnio przez kandydata na kierowcę. Przepisy zbyt często się zmieniają, a przyszli kierowcy nie mają chęci czy czasu, albo zapominają o tym, że trzeba na bieżąco śledzić zmiany tych przepisów. Od tego może zależeć ich życie" - wskazywał w TOK FM Dariusz Chyćko.

Zwracał uwagę, że zmianom być może powinna również ulec forma pytań, a także multimediów używanych podczas egzaminów.

O pomyśle stało się bardzo głośno, podały go inne media. Internauci chętnie komentowali pomysł, podnosząc m.in. kwestie finansowe egzaminów i złożoność przepisów, których muszą się uczyć kierowcy. O planowane zmiany postanowiliśmy zatem zapytać resort infrastruktury.

Ministerstwo odpowiada
W odpowiedzi przesłanej tvn24bis.pl Szymon Huptyś, rzecznik ministerstwa, podkreślił, że "postulaty zgłaszane podczas prac zespołu doradczego przy ministrze infrastruktury będą najpierw dyskutowane w ramach tego zespołu". "Dopiero wypracowane przez cały zespół opinie mogą stać się podstawą do podjęcia ewentualnych prac legislacyjnych" - dodał.

Do zadań zespołu należy analiza przepisów ustawy o kierujących pojazdami oraz opracowanie propozycji zmian w zakresie szkolenia osób ubiegających się o uprawnienia do kierowania pojazdami oraz przeprowadzania egzaminu państwowego na prawo jazdy.

Termin kolejnego posiedzenia zespołu nie został jednak jeszcze ustalony.

Jednocześnie rzecznik prasowy resortu podkreślił, że obecnie ministerstwo infrastruktury "nie pracuje nad propozycją egzaminu teoretycznego zdawanego co roku".

Chciałem oddać PiS sprawiedliwość i skomentować, że to tylko jakiś karaluch z WORD, ale doczytałem, że on jest w "zespole doradczym". Każdy mający czyste intencje i olej w głowie wywaliłby go z tego zespołu natychmiast.

Otóż nie. Ile razy już się słyszało, że "rząd zamierza" albo "rząd pracuje nad" i dalej jakiś wyjątkowo głupi pomysł. Szczególnie za czasów tego rządu. A poitem nic.

Traktowanie łączne polityków i całej biurokracji jest błędem, a już szczególnie w tym przypadku. Jakiś urzędnik z jakiegoś wojewódziego ośrodka ruchu drogowego i jego mokre sny...

2 lata za porobienie 14-latki (nie, nie w zawiasach):

Wspólny wieczór kawalerski w towarzystwie kilku dziewczyn. Wśród nich 14-latka, z którą trzech kolegów uprawiało seks. Mężczyźni z Białegostoku usłyszeli wyroki - 2 lata więzienia.

Do zdarzenia doszło w nocy z 12 na 13 kwietnia 2014 roku w Ełku. W trakcie zakrapianego dużą ilością alkoholu wieczoru kawalerskiego, mężczyznom towarzyszyły miejscowe dziewczyny. Jedna z nich miała zaledwie 14 lat.

Śledczy na trop przestępstwa wpadli przypadkowo. W trakcie śledztwa ws. pseudokibiców i zastosowanym w jego trakcie podsłuchom udało się ustalić, z kim w ełckim hotelu spali mężczyźni. Sprawa znalazła swój finał w sądzie.

Oskarżeni twierdzili, że nie wiedzieli, ile lat ma dziewczyna. Ta argumentacja nie przekonała wymiaru sprawiedliwości. Sąd w Białymstoku wymierzył im karę 2 lat pozbawienia wolności. Wyrok nie jest prawomocny.

White Farmers In South Africa Fear For Their Lives As Attacks Escalate

A British woman, Sue Howarth and her husband Robert Lynn, were woken at 2am by three men breaking into a window of their remote farm in Dullstroom, a small town in the northeast of South Africa, about 240km from the nearest capital city.

The couple, who had lived in the area for 20 years, were tied up, stabbed, and tortured with a blowtorch for several hours. The masked men stuffed a plastic bag down Mrs Howarth’s throat, and attempted to strangle her husband with a bag around his neck. The couple were bundled into their own truck, still in their pyjamas, and driven to a roadside where they were shot. Mrs Howarth, 64, a former pharmaceutical company executive, was shot twice in the head. Mr Lynn, 66, was shot in the neck. Miraculously he survived, and managed to flag down a passer-by early on Sunday morning. Mrs Howarth, who police said was “unrecognisable” from her injuries, had multiple skull fractures, gunshot wounds and “horrific” burns to her breasts.

“Sue was discovered amongst some trees, lying in a ditch,” writes Jana Boshoff, reporter for the local Middelburg Observer newspaper. “Her rescuers managed to find her by following her groans of pain and then noticing drag marks from the road into the field.

“Her head was covered with a towel. Her eyes were swollen shut. She was partially clothed with just scraps of her shirt remaining. Her breasts and upper body was bloody. The plastic bag, shoved down her throat, took some effort to remove because her jaw was clamped down tightly." "How she managed to breathe with the bag in her throat remains a mystery.

In any other country, such a crime would be almost unthinkable. But in South Africa, these kinds of farm attacks are happening nearly every day. This year so far, there have been more than 70 attacks and around 25 murders in similar attacks on white farmers. Earlier this month, for example, 64-year-old Nicci Simpson was tortured with a power drill during an attack involving three men at her home on a farm in the Vaal area, about two hours drive from Johannesburg. When paramedics arrived, they found three dead dogs, and the woman lying in a pool of blood, spokesman Russel Meiring told News24. “They used a drill to torture her,” police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini said.

Official statistics on farm attacks are non-existent, due to what human rights groups have described as a “cover-up” by the notoriously corrupt — and potentially complicit — South African government. The most reliable numbers are released by the Transvaal Agricultural Union, which represents commercial farmers, and civil rights group AfriForum. According to the TAU, last year there were 345 attacks resulting in 70 deaths — the highest death toll since 2008. In 2015 there were 318 attacks resulting in 64 deaths, and the year before there were 277 attacks resulting in 67 deaths.

In total, between 1998 and the end of 2016, 1848 people have been murdered in farm attacks — 1187 farmers, 490 family members, 147 farm employees, and 24 people who happened to be visiting the farm at the time. While South Africa has one of the highest rates of violent crime anywhere in the world, the attacks on white farmers are no ordinary crimes.

While sometimes farmers and their families are tortured to obtain information, such as the whereabouts of keys to the safe, human rights groups say the excessive brutality may be intended to send a message to the general farming community — get out of our country. Victims are often restrained, harmed with weapons such as machetes and pitchforks, burned with boiling water or hot irons, dragged behind vehicles and shot. Female victims are often raped during attacks. But any form of justice is incredibly rare, and white farmers are increasingly questioning their future.

“The farmers live in fear, because being a farmer in South Africa is the most dangerous occupation in the world,” Henk van de Graaf, spokesman for the TAU, told Swedish newspaper Nya Tider last year. “The average murder ratio per 100,000 or the population in the world is nine, I believe. In South Africa, it is 54. But for the farming community it is 138, which is the highest for any occupation in the world.”

Since 2007, at the direction of the government, South African police have stopped releasing statistics about the race of the victims. Monitoring group Genocide Watch says the cover-up has been exacerbated by American and European governments, which have “remained silent about the problem, reinforcing the campaign of denial”

French President Emmanuel Macron is in hot water for saying that one of Africa’s main problems is women having too many children. Social media has been grilling him for blaming innocent children rather than Western companies that are “looting” Africa.

“Seven-Eight children per woman is not a problem of civilization,” one person said, while another added: “It’s 2017 and France still shares colonialist and racist views towards Africa. Some things never change.”
