Gov. Jennifer Granholm will sign into law Friday a ban on indoor smoking in public places.

The Legislature passed the bill Dec. 10 after years of stalemates over exceptions in the law. The measure allows smoking in three Detroit casinos, cigar bars, specialty tobacco shops, home offices and motor vehicles, including commercial trucks.

The smoking ban, which takes effect May 2010, makes Michigan the 38th state with a ban.
